Irish Language Society

Cumann na Gaeilge i mBoston, The Irish Language Society, is a non-profit organization whose aim is to preserve and extend the use of the Irish language through education and cultural activities.  Courses in the Irish language are offered by the Cumann at several locations in the Greater Boston area, including the Irish Cultural Centre in Canton.  Although the Cumann participates in a number of events sponsored by the Cultural Centre the two organizations are not affiliated.  The Cumann operates independently and sometimes holds functions at venues other than the Cultural Centre.   A Céad Míle Fáilte, a cordial welcome, is extended to anyone with an interest in the Irish language to join in the pursuit of the Cumann's aims.

THE IRISH LANGUAGE

Some people might be surprised to find that the Irish people have a language of their own. Gaeilge is the word for the language in Irish. It is not related to the English language anymore than English is related to Hugarian or Russian, Irish is a Celtic language of Indo-European origin, as are most of the Western European tongues.

Tír gan teanga, tír gan anam.
